How to Decide What Online Business to Start

March 18, 2022

A FREE workshop on how to use repeatable social media strategies to hit $10K months.

When I was working my 9-5 I was MISERABLE and I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life… I just knew that it wasn’t sitting in an office 8 hours a day for the next 30 years.

I was feeling all the things you’re probably feeling now… stuck, unsure, frustrated, overworked and underpaid, longing for more money and freedom.

I always thought an online business could be that ticket to freedom. I thought about doing Amazon FBA, drop shipping, starting a boutique, and even creating a YouTube channel. All of those things required things I didn’t have – time and money.

That’s when I realized I could sell something I already had – my skills! After I took inventory of my most profitable skillsets, I realized coaching was the way I could combine everything I loved about working and ditch all the things I hated.

Since getting started last year, I’ve created a 6-figure business and have helped many entrepreneurs pick their dream business models, make $10,000 a month, quit their 9-5’s and so much more.

Let’s break down how YOU can determine what kind of profitable online service-based business you should start.

1. Determine your passions and skills

When you’re deciding what kind of service-based business to start, you want to make sure you’re doing work you actually enjoy doing. This means you need to take inventory of all the skills you’ve accumulated and decide which skills you like using. For example, I’m really good at creating social media strategies, but I definitely do not want to create social media posts for a living. No hate to all my social media managers out there! It’s just not my thing.

To get a full understanding of your skills and what work you’ll actually enjoy doing, ask yourself:

  • What are my core values?
  • What kind of tasks have I done in past jobs? Of those tasks, which ones do I enjoy?
  • What would my perfect work day looked like if I could plan it from beginning to end?
  • If I were to ask my past employers or friends, what would they say I’m really good at?

2. Figure out your mission

Once you have an understanding of your skills, you might want to run off and research different online businesses. Before you do that, think bigger. Other than getting out of your day job, what’s your reason for starting a business. Take a moment to reflect on what you hope to achieve, who you hope to help, and how you want to make an impact.

3. Research different business models

After you understand your skills and your mission, it’s time to figure out what business models align with the work you truly want to be doing. The most common three are virtual assistants, social media managers, and coaches. However, there are soooo many different types of service-based businesses you can start! Do your research and make sure you find one that allows you to use the skills you love using and helps you make the impact you want to make.

4. Make a decision and go for it

It’s very easy to spend months and months thinking about the “perfect” business model. Entrepreneurship is a journey. Once you find something that you think might work, go for it! Don’t spend time overthinking it or doubting. The faster you can fail in business, the faster you can grow. I’ve worked with so many clients who started off as virtual assistants, landed clients, and then later decided they loved doing social media management more. The sooner you can get started, the sooner you can grow your business with services that you love providing!
